These are the years of World War I, and Dr. Stefano Zorzi spends his days at a dispensary in a large city in Northern Italy. There, he not only cares for soldiers returning from the front lines but also fights against those who hope to be exempt from service, simulating illness and self-harm to be sent to military courts. Stefano never imagined he would encounter someone deliberately seeking pathology, like purchasing a lifeboat to save themselves from greater evil. But now he is tired of this conflict that has turned him into a prosecutor and gendarme. Dr. Giulio Faraldi, on the other hand, works in an apartment in a secluded building. He is a restless man who strongly opposes the war, harboring a tender yet possessive love for the soldiers in his "private war." While Stefano does his utmost to treat soldiers and send them back to fight, Giulio makes them sick or helps them seriously self-harm, enough to be exempt from service. These two doctors were university classmates and good friends; they not only compete in their profession but also in matters of the heart: they are both connected to Anna, a brave and strong-natured nurse. But as the terrible "Spanish" flu pandemic hits in 1918, love, politics, and science dangerously intertwine…
