After studying in Japan for many years, Li Shutong (played by Pu Cunxin) finally returned to his beloved homeland, just as the Xinhai Revolution succeeded. He celebrated the republic and became the deputy editor of the Pacific Daily's supplement, yearning for a bright future for his country. However, good times didn't last long; soon the nation fell into warlord conflicts, and Li Shutong transformed from a well-dressed editor into a humble gentleman, making a living as a professor of art. During this time, he trained a group of future art masters including Feng Zikai (played by Yin Zhi) and Liu Zhiping (played by Hu Guangzi). At this point, Li Shutong developed a deep interest in Buddhism, renouncing worldly life and taking the Dharma name Hongyi. The Venerable Master Xu (played by Liu Weiming) of the Minnan Buddhist Academy and Master Hongyi both had grand ambitions; despite belonging to different sects, they ultimately followed the same path.
