The fourth season of the Emmy Award-winning series "Hell on Wheels," one of the highest-rated Western dramas in America, will return on August 3, Beijing time, with an expanded 13 episodes. This year, a special scheduling format will be implemented: the first part will air from August 3 to October 5, followed by a slot taken by the AMC film segment "AMC FearFest," with the final three episodes returning on November 9. The viewership and media ratings for the third season of "Hell on Wheels" significantly improved after changing producers, adjusting the main plotline, and moving to a less competitive Saturday timeslot: the average viewership for each episode in the third season was 3.3 million with live and 3-day playback, a 37.5% increase from the second season (2.4 million) and a 10% rise from the first season (3 million). This also helped boost AMC's Saturday primetime viewership by 97% and total day viewership by 152%. The third season of "Hell on Wheels" was the highest-rated season and received the best media and editor ratings on Metacritic and AV Club, becoming the fifth production from AMC to receive a media score above 70, following the Emmy-winning series "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," "The Walking Dead," and the Emmy-nominated series "The Killing." This was also AMC's first 13-episode production since "The Killing." In the third season finale, Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) marries Naomi, who is carrying his child, and settles into his wife's Mormon family. In the Mormon stronghold where Bohannon resides, the miraculous survivor Swedish man (Christopher Heyerdahl) continues to impersonate a church leader, while Thomas "Doc" Durant (Colm Meaney) returns to lead the Union Pacific Railroad and has pushed their rail endpoint westward to Cheyenne Mountain. Elam (played by Common) is ambushed by a bear while searching for the missing Cullen and is severely injured. In the fourth season, modern civilization continues its westward march alongside the railroad construction, with not only the deadly killers of the past but also unscrupulous newspaper reporters moving with them. The series will continue to focus on the struggle for interests surrounding Cheyenne Mountain's "land of the great plains" and the most important railroad transport hub in the U.S. The fourth season will also introduce several new characters, including John Campbell (played by Jake Weber, known for "Medium" and "Killer Inside Me"). "Hell on Wheels" is produced by John Wirth, who has also worked on "Fallen Skies," "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," and "Dark Angel," with Mark Richard, Jeremy Gold, and Paul Kurta serving as co-producers. AMC will continue the successful viewer-boosting strategy from the third season by scheduling an entire day of Western films leading up to the fourth season, including "The Horse Whisperer," "The Terminator," "Walkabout," and the acquired miniseries "Into the West."
