Kind-hearted and simple country girl Tess (played by Gemma Arterton) seeks to change her family's dire situation, and at their urging, she goes to the wealthy d'Urberville family. She is raped and becomes pregnant by her malicious "cousin," Alec (played by Hans Matheson), in a secluded forest. After returning to her parents and giving birth, her child dies shortly after. Losing her purity, Tess struggles through life amidst the ridicule and gossip of those around her, suffering immense emotional and physical pain. The grueling work on a southern dairy farm brings a fresh start to Tess's painful life, where she meets the handsome and principled Angel (played by Eddie Redmayne) and falls in love with him. On their wedding night, Tess confesses her past to Angel, hoping for forgiveness. However, raised in a Christian family, Angel cannot accept the truth and leaves Tess. Heartbroken, Tess descends into a life of despair haunted by her memories. Meanwhile, the hypocritical Alec reenters her life...This is an adaptation of the famous novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" by British novelist and poet Thomas Hardy. A mini-series consisting of four episodes.
