This series is adapted from Umberto Eco's classic novel of semiotic detective reasoning, telling the story of a murder in a monastery: In 1327 Italy, Franciscan friar William (Turturro) and his apprentice Adso (Damian Hardung) arrive at a secluded monastery in the Alps, where they witness a series of murders. During their investigation, they are pursued by the church prosecutor Bernardo Gui (Everett), who ruthlessly prosecutes anyone critical of Catholic doctrine.
