H.I. (Nicolas Cage) is a habitual offender who falls in love at first sight with prison officer Ed (Holly Hunter), and they get married. Afterward, H.I. decides to turn over a new leaf for his beloved wife. Ed, who loves children, discovers she cannot have kids, leaving her in despair, which deeply pains H.I. A local tycoon, Arizona (Trey Wilson), has quintuplets, and upon hearing this, Ed and H.I. decide to take a risk and steal a baby named Nathan Jr. from him. Ed is ecstatic to have a child, but H.I. gradually feels the pressure of being a father. The frantic tycoon, having lost his child, reports it to the police, but they show little interest in the case. At this moment, a muscular man claiming to be a "hellbent" arrives to assure the tycoon he can help find his son. H.I.'s home is also a mess; two escapees seek refuge with H.I. and discover the hefty price of the baby, leading them to kidnap him. Meanwhile, H.I.'s resentful boss learns the baby’s secret and uses it to blackmail H.I. to comply with his demands. In a critical moment, to protect his wife and child, H.I. must return to his old ways.
