Movies about World War II are a frequent topic in the Polish school of cinema. In "How to be Loved," Has uses the war merely as a backdrop to tell a tragic love story between two ordinary people. The female protagonist's selfless dedication to love ultimately becomes a burden for the man she deeply loves, in a sense ruining his life. All of this occurs in the context of war, as the main character remarks, initially thinking life is just about the things around her, only to later discover that the entire nation is connected to her. The male protagonist also states that we are all ordinary people caught up in the war.
