In 1945, 20-year-old girl Yasuko Takamura (played by Yoshiko Tanaka) escapes the war by taking a boat to her uncle Shigematsu Irie (played by Kazuo Kitamura). Accompanied by a blinding white light and a huge explosion, the black rain from hell falls from the sky, forcing Yasuko to face a baptism of death. Five years later, the Irie couple adopts Yasuko as their daughter, and the family lives a quiet life in the small island village of Fukuyama. The harm caused to ordinary people by the atomic bomb starts to become apparent; those affected by the white light radiation suffer from various illnesses, and normal people keep their distance from them. Those who have experienced the war are left with deep psychological scars, leading to madness, unable to return to normal life. The beautiful Yasuko witnesses the pain and torment suffered by her relatives and friends, and ultimately, the specter of war begins to erode her life... This film is based on the novel of the same name by Masuji Ibuse and has won multiple awards including Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Lighting, Best Music, and Best Supporting Actress at the 1990 Japanese Academy Awards; it also received special mention and a technical award at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.
