Kind-hearted and simple country girl Tess (Gemma Arterton) seeks to change her family's impoverished life and, persuaded by her family, goes to associate with wealthy relatives, the d'Urberville family. She is assaulted and becomes pregnant by the malicious "cousin" Alec (Hans Matheson) in the woods. Pregnant, Tess returns to her parents but soon loses the child. Having lost her purity, Tess struggles through life amid the laughter and gossip of those around her, suffering tremendous emotional and physical damage. The hard labor at a southern dairy farm offers Tess a fresh start and introduces her to the handsome and upright Angel (Eddie Redmayne), with whom she falls in love. On their wedding night, Tess confesses her past to Angel, hoping to win his forgiveness. However, Angel, raised in a Christian family, cannot accept the reality and leaves Tess. Devastated, Tess sinks back into a despairing life tormented by memories of the past. Meanwhile, the hypocritical Alec once again entangles her… Adapted from the famous novel of the same name by British author and poet Thomas Hardy. A mini-series consisting of four episodes.
