This drama is adapted from Thomas Mallon's novel of the same name, incorporating elements of romance and political thriller, chronicling the tumultuous romantic history between two vastly different men who meet under the shadow of McCarthyism in Washington. Hawkins Fuller is a handsome, charismatic man who maintains a lucrative behind-the-scenes role in the political arena. As their romance begins, Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on "subversives" and "sexual deviants," ushering in one of the darkest periods in American history in the 20th century. Over the span of 40 years, Hawkins and Tim intersect in various contexts—protests against the Vietnam War in the 1960s, disco hedonism fueled by drugs in the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, all while facing numerous obstacles from the world and within themselves.
