Tom (Nick Nolte) is a typical Southern American youth whose troubled childhood experiences have shaped him into a silent, cynical man who feels out of place in this insincere world. The news of his brother's death plunges Tom's already chaotic life into deeper despair, putting a significant strain on his relationship with his wife, Sally (Blythe Danner). Tom has a sister named Savannah (Melinda Dillon) who is trying to make it in New York, but instead of hearing of her success, he receives the devastating news that Savannah has attempted suicide and is now in a mental hospital. Susan (Barbra Streisand) is Savannah's psychiatrist, and she discovers that the key to healing Savannah lies hidden in a past that she refuses to discuss. Thus, Susan seeks out Tom, hoping he can lend her a helping hand.
