Pierre (played by Paul Frankeur) and Jean (played by Laurent Terzieff) are two pilgrims who set out from Paris to walk along the Camino de Santiago to the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Soon after their departure, they encounter a strange man in a black cloak (played by Alain Cuny), who predicts that they will become involved with a prostitute and bear a child. Along the way, Pierre and Jean traverse different times and spaces, meeting various Catholic heretics, witnessing the mysterious woodland rituals of Priscillian (played by Jean-Claude Carrière), and observing a duel between Jesuits and Jansenists. Upon arriving in Spain, they agree to guard the donkeys and cargo of two young men they meet on the road. These two are being pursued for openly challenging the doctrine of the Trinity, one of whom has a vision of the Virgin Mary (played by Edith Scob) that very night. This film is inspired by the book "A History of Spanish Heretics" and won the Interfilm Award at the 1969 Berlin Film Festival.
