In an unknown diamond mining area in South America, a dictatorial military force aims to close the mines, facing armed resistance from the workers. French miner Castin (played by Charles Vanel) falls in love with a local prostitute named Jin (played by Simone Signoret). After being accused of leading a rebellion, he decides to escape by boat at night with Jin and their only daughter Maria (played by Michèle Girardon). The town's priest, Father Lisardi (played by Michel Piccoli), is misunderstood while trying to protect Castin and ends up having to flee with them. During the riot, the adventurer Chuck (played by Georges Machal), who blew up the military command post, also arrives on the boat that night and forces everyone to abandon it mid-journey, trekking through the tropical rainforest towards Brazil. The group of five struggles through the mosquito-infested jungle, battling hunger and repeatedly getting lost, some experiencing hallucinations and others going mad from despair. Will they manage to escape from danger and flee successfully? This film is the second part of a trilogy co-produced with France after Luis Buñuel's period of exile ended and he returned to the European film scene.
