In the near future, brilliant scientist Will Caster (played by Johnny Depp) develops an artificial intelligence robot named "Pin" that is closest to human. While he garners acclaim from the scientific community, he also faces countless criticism and attacks from detractors. After a meeting, Will is shot by a member of a radical organization. Although he narrowly escapes at the time, the bullet smeared with radioactive material gradually erodes Will's life. His wife and research partner Evelyn (played by Rebecca Hall) is naturally heartbroken, but she and Will's friend Max (played by Paul Bettany) manage to upload Will's consciousness into a smart computer. Miraculously, Will successfully revives in the virtual world.
