The CIA receives intelligence revealing that one of their agents is a traitor, planning to sell the list of agents deployed in Eastern Europe to a foreign espionage organization. Under the leadership of agent chief Jim (played by Jon Voight), a group of agents including Ethan (played by Tom Cruise) head to the location of the exchange. However, they fall into an ambush, and except for Ethan and Jim's wife Claire, the rest of the team is killed. At this moment, Ethan's account inexplicably receives an additional $120,000, making him the prime suspect of being the mole. With no other choice, Ethan must venture alone into the danger zone to discover the traitor who has betrayed them. After contacting the head of the foreign espionage group, Max, he agrees to help Max steal the CIA's list of spies in exchange for the name of the mole within the CIA.
