Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) is a seasoned detective who has struggled to make a breakthrough in the police force. He feels depressed and frustrated, often resorting to alcohol to escape reality. Meanwhile, Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy), who grew up in a Black neighborhood, has been a habitual criminal, engaging in criminal activities from a young age. However, both Jack and Reggie yearn to change their life circumstances, seek new opportunities, and make amends for their mistakes. The turning point of the story occurs in the Walden Hotel, where the violent criminal Albert (James Remar) and his partner Billy (Sonny Landham) successfully escape from prison and hide in this hotel. They use fake names to conceal their identities and plan to continue their criminal endeavors. At the same time, Jack and his colleagues Vincent and Argen are assigned to investigate a case, only to unfortunately become Albert's targets. Jack decides to take revenge for his colleagues and requests his superior to allow him to handle the case independently.
