Over 30 years have passed since the most serious nuclear disaster in history, which released a massive amount of high-level radioactive fallout into the atmosphere—100 times more than the total radiation from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. Today, two scientists are granted permission to enter the infamous Chernobyl nuclear power plant vicinity: biologist Rob Nelson and anthropologist Mary-Ann Ochota. They are among the first scientists permitted unlimited access to the dangerous area of Chernobyl, with the aim of investigating the impact on the environment and wildlife in the world’s most severely contaminated region three decades later. To conduct their research, they can stay for extended periods inside, but they must ensure that their exposure to radiation remains within acceptable limits.
