College student Lin Jianqing (played by Jing Boran) meets his fellow townsman Fang Xiaoxiao (played by Zhou Dongyu) on a train during the Spring Festival travel rush, and the two young people from the north begin a life of shared struggles. The New Year's Eve in a small northeastern city, the computer parts market in Zhongguancun, the snowy streets of Beijing, street vendors in underground passages, and various tenants in rental apartments all witness their joys and sorrows. After being repeatedly deceived in love, Xiaoxiao finally starts a relationship with the newly graduated Jianqing. Year after year, despite life's hardships, they always return home together, sharing New Year's Eve dinner in Jianqing's father’s (played by Tian Zhuangzhuang) small restaurant, as close as family. However, as time passes, they begin to diverge, experiencing love, breakups, missed opportunities, and a reunion ten years later... the later versions of themselves can never return to the past.
