In 1977, the eighth-grade students of Wafang School were informed that their class was about to be disbanded due to the teacher's limited abilities. The class fell into chaos, and parents pressured the principal, insisting that if a teacher wasn’t arranged, the school would not have peace. In this desperate situation, a young teacher named Fangge was sent from the upper levels to take over. She decided to start with the student who was performing the worst in the class, Dalu; however, in order to achieve their goal of attending high school in the city, Dalu and the other students tried every means to disrupt the class and frequently challenged Fangge.
