During a competition, Dan Millman (played by Scott Mechlowicz) executes a set of difficult ring maneuvers but shatters his left leg upon landing. He suddenly awakens, realizing it was just a dream. At three in the morning, shaken, Millman goes out for fresh air and unexpectedly meets an elderly man with extraordinary skills, Socrates (played by Nick Nolte), at a gas station, and they become close friends. Millman is handsome and performs excellently, which attracts many girls; however, he causes a rift with his friends after sleeping with a friend's girlfriend. Additionally, he has always aspired to complete a difficult maneuver, but his coach strongly opposes it out of fear for his safety. When troubled, he visits the gas station to talk with Socrates. However, a sudden car accident leads Millman to lose everything; his feet are shattered in nearly 100 places, and his gymnastics career faces a devastating blow.
