Yoko (played by Akiyo) appears to be a gentle and courteous traditional woman on the surface, yet she possesses avant-garde and unconventional thoughts. Her teaching career in Taipei has resulted in her expecting a child, which leads to a conflict with her parents regarding whether or not to give birth — she does not believe that a child necessarily needs a father. Zhao (played by Tadanobu Asano), the owner of a small bookstore and also a friend of Yoko, likes her, but since he is not mentally prepared to take on responsibility, he does not extend a timely hand during one of the most challenging times in Yoko's life. As a tribute to Ozu's 100th birthday, this film could not replicate the Tokyo scenery through Ozu's lens (as it has already disappeared) but captures the quiet and serene atmosphere and the restrained emotions characteristic of Ozu's films. However, time has passed for several decades, and the perspective on restrained feelings has undergone significant changes.
