Song Yunhui (played by Wang Kai) is exceptionally talented but comes from a poor background, facing constant discrimination. However, he seizes the opportunity presented by the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1978, works hard, and becomes a technical staff member in a state-owned enterprise, gradually rising through the ranks and laying the foundation for his successful life, though he gradually becomes lost amid the transformations of the new era. In contrast, his brother-in-law Lei Dongbao (played by Yang Shuo) comes from humble origins and is a typical "rough man" with great initiative. He leads the villagers to follow policies during the wave of rural reform, always staying ahead of the times. However, due to his lack of education and narrow vision, he ultimately stumbles in the face of new challenges. If Song Yunhui and Lei Dongbao's experiences reflect the narratives of the state-owned and collective economies, then individual entrepreneur Yang Xun (played by Dong Zijian) undoubtedly represents individual economy. In a rapidly changing era, he has nervously seized business opportunities and fallen into traps, going through many ups and downs in the business world before finally owning his own enterprise, becoming a typical figure of individual economy in that era.
