Newly appointed prison guard Juan (played by Alberto Ammann) enters the prison a day early to demonstrate a good professional image. However, on this day, inmate leader "Mama" injures a guard and leads a riot, plunging the prison into chaos... Juan, injured, is abandoned by his colleagues in cell 211. To avoid being taken hostage by the inmates, he has to disguise himself as a criminal to gain Mama's trust and seeks an opportunity to escape. The inmates use the three ETA terrorists in the prison, each serving over a hundred years, to blackmail the authorities into agreeing to their negotiation terms. Due to prior agreements between the government and ETA, the prison authorities and the special operations team are hesitant to mount a strong attack, resulting in a stalemate. Meanwhile, the prison riot, reported in the media, triggers a chain reaction as family members flock to the prison for news, but they are met with brutal beatings from the guards. Juan's pregnant wife is unfortunately injured, prompting him to take reckless actions in a bid to ensure his escape and help quell the situation... The film swept eight major awards at the 2009 Goya Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor.
