Charles (Hugh Grant), a regular at weddings, harbors an inexplicable fear of marriage. At a country wedding, he falls head over heels for American girl Carrie (Andie MacDowell). Ignoring his friends' gossip about her, he spends a wonderful night with her, but the next day, Carrie returns to America, leaving Charles in a state of disarray. Two months later, they meet again at a wedding in London, but Carrie is about to get married. However, with her initiative, they share another memorable night together. A month later, Charles receives Carrie's wedding invitation. While choosing a gift, he encounters Carrie again, and she shares stories of her romantic escapades, making Charles want to propose to her. Dejected after attending Carrie's wedding, Charles accepts the confession of a girl he doesn't love, but it isn't until the arrival of a funeral that he finally gathers the courage to confess his love to the newly encountered Carrie.
