Shortly after the partition of Poland by the Soviets and Germans in 1939, Polish youth Wyszeck Janusz (Jim Sturgess) was sent to a labor camp in Siberia for his so-called "anti-party and anti-Stalin" espionage activities. It was now 1940, and in the harsh Siberian cold, Janusz met fellow political prisoner and actor Andrei, who had long been brewing an escape plan. They were later joined by American Smith (Ed Harris), criminal Valka (Colin Farrell), and others in their small circle. On a snowy night, Janusz and six others successfully escaped the labor camp. The only thing they knew was to head south toward Lake Baikal while avoiding the ever-present informers. Along the way, some could not withstand the harsh climate and perished. As they were about to reach Lake Baikal, a mysterious girl named Irena (Saoirse Ronan) joined them, adding further difficulties to their journey as they prepared to cross Mongolia and Tibet, and scale the Himalayas to reach British-controlled India in search of freedom...
