The story takes place in Northeast China in 1970. The four siblings, Yiku (He Bing), Sitian (Yang Gongru), Qitian (Cui Lin), and Qimiao (Zhou Yun), share a deep bond. Their father, Qi Shiyin (Li Youbin), is a music teacher at a school, and the family lives a peaceful and happy life. However, one day, misfortune strikes; Qi Shiyin loses his job in an accident, and his wife falls ill with tuberculosis due to overwork, plunging the entire family into hardship. To make ends meet, Qi Shiyin seeks alternative means of support, but unexpectedly dies in a car accident. Shortly after, his wife also passes away, leaving the four children orphaned and living in their uncle's house as dependents. Unable to withstand this life any longer, the eldest sibling, Yiku, runs away with his siblings and ultimately finds three families willing to adopt them. From then on, the four siblings are scattered across different places.
