The story takes place in a British school where the classical literature teacher Harris (played by Albert Finney) is about to face retirement. Taplow (played by Ben Silverstone) is a student who Harris likes very much, but Taplow tells Harris he has decided to give up classical literature to pursue science instead. Afterwards, the principal approaches Harris with bad news: the school does not plan to pay him a pension. When Harris's wife Laura (played by Greta Scacchi) learns of this, a fierce argument erupts between them. In fact, Laura has already betrayed Harris, having an improper relationship with a man named Frank (played by Matthew Modine). As the retirement ceremony approaches, it seems that Harris's life can never return to the way it was.
