This film is adapted from Lin Haiyin's short story of the same name. A little girl, Lin Yingzi (played by Shen Jie), lives in southern Beijing fifty years ago. Nearby her home, there lives a madwoman, Xiu Zhen (played by Zhang Min). Xiu Zhen's husband was killed for participating in the student movement, and her child is missing, leaving her mentally unstable; she often treats Yingzi as her own child "Little Guizi." Yingzi also likes Xiu Zhen and promises to help her find Little Guizi. Yingzi has a poor little friend, Niu'er, who often suffers beatings from her adoptive father while training in opera. Yingzi accidentally discovers that Niu'er has the same birthmark as Little Guizi and helps them reunite. After Yingzi starts elementary school, her family moves to Changdian. In an abandoned courtyard at her doorstep, Yingzi finds a pile of stolen goods hidden by a thief (played by Zhang Fengyi). The thief engages in disgraceful activities to afford his brother's education, but Yingzi does not see him as a bad person. Soon, the maid Su Ma returns home, and after her father's death, Yingzi's childhood seems to come to an abrupt end...
