This work is adapted from the 2000 documentary of the same name, telling the rise and fall of Tammy Faye (played by Jessica Chastain) and Jim Bakker (played by Andrew Garfield), a couple who became television evangelists. In the 1970s-80s, Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker rose from poverty to create the largest religious broadcasting network in the world and a theme park, promoting themes of love, acceptance, and prosperity that earned them respect. Tammy Faye became a legend with her exaggerated lashes, unique singing voice, and her warm embrace of people from all walks of life. However, good times were short-lived; financial misconduct, devious competitors, and the eruption of a sex scandal caused the couple's marriage to break down, leading to the collapse of the empire they had meticulously built.
