William Foster, played by Michael Douglas, is an engineer at a defense contractor who feels deeply depressed after being fired. Due to his divorce, he was not invited to his youngest daughter's birthday and, while stuck in traffic, he leaves his car and enters a grocery store to get change to make a phone call, but faces difficulties. In frustration, he grabs a baseball bat and vandalizes the store. While resting in a park, he gets into a fight with some thugs; at a fast-food restaurant, after a dispute with a server, he pulls out a gun he confiscated from the thugs and starts firing wildly, completely losing control. In the end, he finds himself facing the gun of a retired police officer, prompting him to question, "Am I the bad guy?"
