This film does not rely on the Bible, but instead uses a narrative to illustrate the internal conflict of faith. When Israel is under Roman rule, the carpenter Jesus (Willem Dafoe) is tasked with making crosses for the Roman army, and he is troubled by what seems to be a calling from God. Jesus sets out to seek the truth and encounters the rebel Judas (Harvey Keitel) and an old friend, the prostitute Mary Magdalene, who accuse Jesus of cowardice, strengthening his faith. More and more followers join Jesus' cause, and John the Baptizer directs Jesus to the desert. Jesus resists temptation and gains greater power, leading an assault on the Jerusalem Temple, causing Judas to betray him to the Roman authorities. While on the cross, Jesus receives a message from an angel, gets down from the cross, and lives a normal life until many years later when he uncovers the truth and returns to his fate... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Kazantzakis. Since Martin Scorsese first planned to bring it to the screen in 1983, the objections from religious groups have been loud, causing repeated delays in the filming process.
