In the 1940s, under fascist German rule in Romania, partisan and anti-fascist resistance groups constantly attacked enemy docks, stations, and bridges. With the front lines tightening, the rulers could not find a captain to transport ammunition to the front. Meanwhile, the resistance was troubled by a lack of weapons, and underground member Toma (played by Petrescu) infiltrated a prisoner convoy at the docks to board a ship carrying ammunition. Newlywed captain Mihai (played by Vlabie) is a patriotic man who despises evil, and his wife Ana (played by Giolei) is beautiful and kind. Toma is selected by Mihai to become a sailor and transport ammunition to the front. On the ship, they teamed up to eliminate the German soldiers escorting the ammunition, neutralized terrifying mines drifting in the Danube River, and delivered the weapons to the partisans. In battle, Mihai unfortunately sacrifices himself and, holding Toma's hand before dying, tells him, "Ana is a good girl, you need to take care of her..."
