Several women whose husbands are rarely at home have their own jobs, but they feel empty and bored in their spare time. Every day, they wait at home for their husbands to call or to find time to return from work. Liu Yufen is a female police officer, and her husband works in Shenzhen, only returning home occasionally. Yufen has developed a habit of talking to her husband on the phone every night, but he often doesn't answer. She hopes to get pregnant to have something to hold onto, but after finally becoming pregnant, she has a miscarriage while capturing a criminal suspect. An accidental encounter with traffic policeman Hong Dawei marks the beginning of a new life for Yufen, as they become a pair of comedic adversaries, with a chicken foot as a token of their love. Yufen gains clarity about her situation and emotions; she wants a man who needs her as much as she needs him, ultimately deciding to divorce her husband. Zhao Jialing’s husband is a photographer who spends most of his time collecting materials. Jialing not only has to excel as a departmental manager and sell houses but also has to take her daughter to and from kindergarten. When she encounters work challenges, she asks Yufen for help with her daughter Dou Dou. Yufen and Jialing are good friends who often share insights about work and relationships. Jialing also meets a Taiwanese businessman, Lin Zhonghe, who is very caring towards her and Dou Dou. Although Jialing's emotions remain uncertain, she ultimately preserves her marriage, leading to a family reunion. Zhu Tingting is a salesperson in Jialing's department, and her boyfriend is a married man, Lao Ba, who happens to be Jialing's classmate. They are caught on a date by Jialing, putting her in a difficult position, and she decides to keep it a secret while managing both sides. Tingting is infatuated, and Lao Ba enjoys the affair. However, when he decides to leave Tingting, she attempts suicide but is saved. Once Tingting calms down, she only wants a child and feels attached to Lao Ba. However, an incident reveals an ectopic pregnancy, and she ultimately cannot be saved. Wei Hong's husband has been paralyzed in a wheelchair for years and is unable to move. Meeting with an old flame leads to her being reported for prostitution to Yufen. This brings Yufen into contact with Wei Hong's case. Wei Hong's husband constantly yells for a divorce, but she refuses. Her mother-in-law, meanwhile, forbids her from taking care of her husband unless she agrees not to divorce him. Wei Hong feels guilty towards her husband and desperately wants to help him, but he is ungrateful. Her daughter, Xiaorong, receives anonymous letters revealing Wei Hong's affair, prompting her to seek help from Yufen. Yufen guides Wei Hong and Xiaorong, revealing that Xiaorong is actually Wei Hong's daughter with her old lover. This narrative represents the stories of four women, exposing the societal conditions of the time, reflecting the isolation of women at home while their husbands are away, and discussing the difficult and helpless choice between love and marriage.
