After only half a year in college, the money-hungry mother forces Songlian (Gong Li) to marry into the Chen family, becoming the fourth concubine of the master. In the Chen residence, there is an old rule: the concubines must stand in front of their own rooms in the evening, waiting for the red lantern that signifies the master has come to "visit." At first, due to her "newcomer" status, Songlian receives the most favor from the master, but this also leads to her being bullied by the other three concubines, especially the scheming second concubine (Cao Cuifen).
