The story takes place on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the founding of the nation, where a certain unit of the People's Liberation Army is selecting soldiers to participate in the parade. Instructor Sun Fang (played by Sun Chun) employs strict and harsh training methods, putting pressure on many new recruits. Liu Guoqiang (played by Guan Qiang) has an active personality and is eager to help fellow townsman Hao Xiaoyuan (played by Kang Hua). He is very curious about the squad leader Li Weicheng’s (played by Wang Xueqi) decision to enroll for the parade, not understanding its significance for this veteran. Squad leader Jiang Junbiao (played by Lu Lei), who has a pigeon-toed gait, is frequently criticized during training, and the quick-tongued Liu Guoqiang advises him to use a backpack strap to correct his legs. Unexpectedly, Jiang Junbiao takes this joke seriously. During a group meeting, Lv Chun (played by Wu Ruofu) speaks frankly, voicing the soldiers' inner thoughts. Each person is internally pursuing the meaning of the parade. After training in over 40-degree heat, Liu Guoqiang, who develops a high fever, perseveres until the end and is sent to the hospital. Li Weicheng visits him but hesitates to speak. It turns out he is seriously ill and cannot participate in the parade. Hao Xiaoyuan loses his mother, and Sun Fang discusses with everyone, deciding to let him return home for the funeral. However, unexpectedly, he comes back. One touching event after another transforms the parade from a simple drill into a spiritual support for them...
