In the summer of 1949, Shuping, a maid of a wealthy businessman in southern Fujian, married and moved to an offshore island, never having met her husband, Jinshui, who, along with the men from the island, was captured by the Kuomintang army and taken to Taiwan. Shuping vowed with other women who lost their husbands on the island to serve their in-laws in this life and to keep a home for their husbands.
