1930s Shanghai, China. It was a time when the world's most advanced scientific advancements coexisted with centuries-old superstitions. Many people became overnight millionaires, while others faced disgrace and perilous situations. It was a period when ordinary citizens were lost in their daily struggles, making it an ideal breeding ground for all sorts of bizarre happenings. The mysteries that ordinary people couldn’t comprehend are unraveled through the detective work of the protagonist Cheng Sihan. This illustrates that bold scientific hypotheses, coupled with cautious verification, are the nemeses of ignorance and superstition. The story is divided into ten short tales, each consisting of two episodes. The characters are interconnected, yet each story stands alone, serving as ten individual series... (1) The Eternal Hotel (Jasmine Scent) A legendary place said to solve life and death issues. Visitors come either to seek longevity or to end their own lives (or those of others). Shanghai's richest man, Deng Liren, had once confessed in front of friends that he had visited there several times, always to end someone else's life. However, all those who died were due to illness, with no evidence of murder. Eventually, he received an invitation from the Eternal Hotel and thus became a victim. Reporter Ding Hong took the risk to report on this, and in doing so, faced danger herself. The infamous thief, the Prince, was considered the prime suspect, and Cheng Sihan eventually unraveled the mystery behind Deng Liren and others' disappearances, gaining a lifelong friendship with the Prince in the process. (2) Dinosaur Eggs Dinosaur eggs on display at the history museum were stolen, with evidence indicating that the millennia-old fossils still showed signs of life. Soon, rumors spread about the appearance of dinosaurs, leading to gruesome incidents of dismemberment and property destruction. Various pieces of evidence pointed to dinosaurs being responsible, instilling fear among the citizens. Using his remarkable wit and extensive knowledge, along with the help of Ding Hong and the Prince, Cheng Sihan meticulously uncovered the truth behind the purported appearance of prehistoric creatures. (3) The Goddess of Revenge A film titled "The Goddess of Revenge" caused a massive uproar. Several viewers felt depressed after watching it. The film company's boss subsequently committed suicide, and even Ding Hong nearly required psychological counseling following her viewing. Cheng Sihan eventually uncovered the truth behind the phenomenon and exposed the conspirators behind the scenes. (4) The Last Gambling King The Little Knife Gang and the Xuhui Gang battled fiercely for control over Shiliupu. They decided to hold a gambling showdown. In order to facilitate the return of gambling king Long Batian, a bloody storm erupted in Shanghai. Fortunately, Cheng Sihan revealed Long Batian's secret of always winning through the use of magic, preventing a massacre in the city. (5) The Twin Heirs Wealthy Chen Zhenghao's last wish was for his son Chen Qianshan to find his long-lost twin brother, Chen Wanshui, before he could inherit the fortune. However, the day after the brother was found, Chen Qianshan unexpectedly died. Chen Wanshui not only inherited all the wealth but also began a romance with Chen Qianshan’s fiancée. Another man claiming to be the real brother Chen Wanshui appeared, asserting that the previously found brother was an imposter and the murderer of the elder brother, causing a dramatic turn of events. Without Cheng Sihan's intervention, the mystery would have remained forever unsolved. (6) The Mad Dog The Mad Dog is not a canine but a person, a notorious thug from Shanghai. Anyone who offends him faces his merciless wrath, like a mad dog. Every month, he claimed a victim, yet aside from bite marks, no other evidence remained. Cheng Sihan discovered that behind the Mad Dog's murders lay a tragic story—he was merely a puppet, manipulated by someone behind the scenes. (7) The Singing Phantom A young and beautiful singer, Huang Ying, known for her captivating voice, suddenly disappeared, suspected to have been murdered. However, her voice resurfaced in her sister. All clues pointed to a collusion between her manager and sister. At this moment, Cheng Sihan found the singer, proving she was alive. The sister, however, was disfigured. Why did such a tragedy occur? And why did the singer go missing? The process was unfathomable. (8) The Crow and the Magpie A columnist named Crow, renowned alongside Ding Hong, was poisoned and left a dying wish for Ding Hong to expose a bank embezzlement conspiracy. The Prince was injured in a shooting, and the bank chairman committed suicide. Cheng Sihan started investigating ancient antiques collected by the bank and uncovered clues that ultimately pointed to Boss Tong. (9) Surrounded on All Sides This time, Cheng Sihan found himself implicated in a murder case. He was discovered holding the murder weapon, having fainted in a room with the victim—who happened to be a perverse individual that had previously targeted Cheng Sihan. Furthermore, Cheng Sihan was discovered to be a drug user, with all evidence stacked against him, even leading him to admit that the evidence was enough for a conviction. Although he was imprisoned, with the help of Ding Hong and the Prince, he ultimately cleared his name and resolved to confront the underground emperor of Shanghai. (10) The Battle Between Good and Evil Boss Tong is the underground emperor of Shanghai, controlling the underworld and bribing officials to dominate the city's economy while also being the largest philanthropist in the region. The public was deceived without realizing it. When Ding Hong, the Prince, and Cheng Sihan joined forces, they faced public backlash. Detective Li was even ambushed as a result. In the end, Cheng Sihan found sufficient evidence to prove that Boss Tong was the mastermind of the city's evils, leading Detective Li to bring him to justice. Boss Tong ultimately committed self-immolation.
