In the early 1960s, to reduce the sandstorm hazards in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the government designated the Forestry Department and Hebei Province to establish a mechanical forest farm on the Saharan Desert in Chengde, to resist the southward invasion of the Hunshandake and Keshiketeng deserts. A pioneering team of 369 people, including the first generation of tree planters represented by the protagonists Feng Cheng and Qin Xuemei—forestry graduates and staff from 18 provinces and cities across the country—led local officials and the masses in the beginning of their struggle against nature. Unexpectedly, due to harsh planting conditions and the failure of mechanized afforestation, they shifted to manual planting. In an environment with an average altitude of 1500 meters and minimum temperatures exceeding minus 43 degrees Celsius, for nearly half a century, they braved the cold, fought the heat, dedicated their youth, and shed blood to create "the largest man-made forest sea in the world," solidifying the green ecological barrier of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and safeguarding its blue sky. On the desolate Saharan Desert, Feng Cheng and his companions advanced and retreated together through hardships, also reaping friendship and love, penning a magnificent poem of life.
