Nick Flynn (played by Paul Dano) is a young writer who grew up with his single mother Judy (played by Julianne Moore) and has long forgotten what his father looks like, until one day he receives a call from Jonathan (played by Robert De Niro), who claims to be his father. Jonathan is evicted by his landlord and asks Nick to borrow his car for a move. Suddenly having a dad who is also a down-and-out writer, with all his luggage in tow, makes Nick very embarrassed in front of his roommate. After spending a night at a homeless shelter, where Nick works, Jonathan, now homeless, decides to avoid further discomfort and starts to spend his days at the station or in abandoned construction sites while convincing himself that he's gathering material for his next great novel. Hearing sporadic news about his father's miserable condition, Nick ultimately decides to bring him back, but at this point, he doesn't even know if his father is still alive...
