In the 1920s and 1930s, Shanghai became the largest metropolis in the Far East. Surrounding small towns gradually became influenced by this foreign style. Young people in the town left their homes, some went to Shanghai to study and learn, while others went abroad. They brought new ideas and started new thoughts in the town. The story begins against this backdrop of changing times, where the grievances of the era quietly began to transform in the younger generation... Zhang's family is a hereditary family from Nanxiang, owning the largest dining establishment in town—Rihua Xuan Steamed Bun Restaurant. The only son, Zhang Yanzu, is a modern youth who returned from studying abroad, filled with ambition to write "A History of Folk Customs in Jiangnan" for the sake of the nation's spirit. His cultural patriotism greatly disappoints his father, who wants him to inherit the family business, creating a rift between father and son. The Li family owns the famous Yujinhang Restaurant, known for its excellent wine. The only daughter, Xianglan, is a renowned beauty in the town, having studied in Shanghai. She has strong opinions, is willful, and does as she pleases, causing headaches for her father, Li Ruiding. Xianglan's brother, Xingbao, is a notorious bully in the town. The Zhang and Li families have not interacted due to past grievances, but the love between their children causes a stir. During the lively Dragon Boat Festival in Nanxiang, the two young people elope. Faced with opposition, Yanzu bravely confronts death to defend their love, and eventually, Xianglan threatens to die, leading them to escape to Shanghai. Life in Shanghai is romantic, but the conflicts brought about by poverty cannot be concealed. To support Yanzu in writing his book, Xianglan has to work as a singer in a nightclub, which leads to misunderstandings with Yanzu, resulting in his fleeing from the wedding and being brought back to Nanxiang by Wang Xi, who was sent to retrieve him. Yanzu, who is intent on bringing "folk customs" to the West, continually longs to return to Britain. His father threatens him with the loss of the manuscript to force him into marriage. Wang Xi, who is desperately trying to win Yanzu back, is struck with disbelief upon discovering that the woman he loves, Yue'e, is actually Yanzu's bride. Family grudges and personal feelings—what weighs more? Wang Xi chooses the former, finally embarking on a path of no return. A series of Wang Xi's retaliations lead to the Zhang family being destroyed. Yue'e pretends to divorce Yanzu to save him. Her declaration of loyalty eventually touches Yanzu's heart, and he falls in love with his wife. Young master Hou, who once had a betrothal with the Li family, colludes with Wang Xi to trick Yue'e, who wishes to publish for Yanzu, into pawnning the family heirloom of the Nanxiang Jingzhuang. Before the Jingzhuang, which has caused ruin, Wang Xi smiles with satisfaction. As time passes, Xianglan realizes that she still loves Yanzu and decides to take the risk of stealing the Jingzhuang. The two escape to a foreign land. In the foreign land, Yanzu hears the news of Yue'e’s suicide and is heartbroken. In fact, Yue'e did not die; she gave birth to Xiuxiu, opened Rihua Xuan, and lived on strong and resilient. Just as Yanzu was about to complete his manuscript and return to Nanxiang, a bomb destroyed Rihua Xuan and obliterated Yanzu's manuscript. Yue'e witnessed everything, her heart shattered. Spring came after winter, and eight years after the War of Resistance against Japan ended, Xiuxiu grew up. She is unaware that her "father" Wang Xi is actually the enemy of the Zhang family, while her beloved Chinese literature teacher is her real father. In the final stage of her illness, Xianglan has one wish—to walk into the wedding hall with Yanzu properly. But this wish cannot be fulfilled due to a scheme by young master Hou. To save Xianglan from prison, Yanzu spares no effort, even giving up the Jingzhuang. At this moment, everyone discovers that the Jingzhuang they had fought over was actually a fake. The real Jingzhuang is quietly placed by Wang Xi into a music box, a gift for Xiuxiu. Yanzu finally learns the truth about Xiuxiu's identity, leading to a "conversation between men" with Wang Xi. Yanzu declares he will rescue Xianglan and fulfill her lifelong wish. Wang Xi and Yue'e also deserve a new life. However, danger is quietly approaching. The gangsters, who set a trap to seize the Jingzhuang, surround Yanzu and the others under the leadership of young master Hou. The sound of gunfire erupts, grievances turn to ashes. Left behind, Yanzu takes Xiuxiu to a distant place. Fifty years later, the father and daughter return to Nanxiang, donate the Jingzhuang, and burn his "A History of Folk Customs in Jiangnan" before the graves of the two women he was intertwined with throughout his life, fulfilling his lifelong wishes: love and manuscripts.
