Joseph (played by Peter Mullan) has a broken family and leads a chaotic, self-destructive life. Constantly getting into trouble, he inadvertently stumbles into a clothing store and meets the owner, Hannah (played by Olivia Colman). Hannah is a devout Catholic living in an upscale neighborhood with a seemingly perfect husband, but the fact that she is unable to conceive has been a constant burden for her. Joseph feels a kindred spirit in Hannah, and indeed, her life is not as peaceful as it appears; her seemingly perfect husband is, in secret, a terrifying abuser who often resorts to physical violence against her. One day, after enduring yet another episode of brutal mistreatment, Hannah, with bruises all over her face, seeks out Joseph and tells him she has decided to leave her husband, hoping that Joseph can take her in since she has no one else. This act stirs memories of Joseph’s late wife, and he agrees to help Hannah pack her belongings. Joseph takes Hannah's key and enters her home, but the scene that unfolds before him leaves him shocked. The senseless violence looms over this neighborhood like a tyrannosaurus.
