At the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, two Marines, Dawson and Downey, are accused of killing another soldier, Santiago. Navy lawyer Daniel Kaffee (played by Tom Cruise) and his assistant Sam are assigned to the case. They discover that Santiago had sought to be transferred from the base and had reported Dawson. Kaffee initially hoped for a plea deal for a two-year sentence. However, the two soldiers maintain their innocence, claiming their actions against Santiago were in execution of a superior's "Code Red." The "Code Red" is an unofficial reprimand allowed by officers that soldiers carry out privately. Kaffee, Sam, and another attorney, Galloway (played by Demi Moore), form the defense and investigate. The base commander, Colonel Jessup (played by Jack Nicholson), is a key figure in the case; he denied Santiago's request for a transfer and issued the "Code Red," later altering flight records. Although Kaffee knows the truth, he struggles with insufficient evidence, as implicating Colonel Jessup could bring trouble for himself. What will be the outcome of this justice-seeking lawsuit?
