Zhang Mingtang, a young officer of the Guizhou Qian Army, is the son of a wealthy businessman from Tongren. He is ordered to return home from the front lines of the anti-communist campaign to oversee the pursuit of the Red Army's Qian Dong Independent Division, which is breaking through. He begins to expand and reorganize the local garrison. Due to his sympathy for the Red Army's injured soldiers and the encouragement of his lover Huang Feier, he takes the risk of providing assistance for their evacuation. However, he is reported by Sun Rubai, the son of the rival Sun family, leading to the complete failure of the evacuation. As a result, Zhang's family suffers a downfall at the hands of the Sun family, and he himself becomes wanted for aiding communism. The Red Army mistakenly sees him as a traitor.
Caught in a dilemma, Zhang Mingtang is taken in by the leader of the Peach Blossom Village, who admires him. He decides to go down the mountain to seek revenge for his family. He kills his enemy Sun Yaozu, who framed him, and the garrison leader Zhu Hanchun but ends up imprisoned. Peach Blossom comes to his rescue and keeps Zhang Mingtang in the village. He helps Peach Blossom organize the village, train the village soldiers, and gradually gains the upper hand in conflicts with the local bandit Ma Sandao, curbing his power.
Zhang's lover Huang Feier, forced by circumstances, marries Sun Rubai from the rival Sun family. Yet, she cannot forget Zhang Mingtang, deepening Sun Rubai's hatred for him as the murderer of his father.
Sun Rubai, once an unsuccessful young master, resolves to enlist and becomes the captain of the local garrison driven by emotions and family enmity. This leads to years of grudges and conflicts with Zhang Mingtang.
Although the Red Army's evacuation fails, the revolutionary spirit lives on. Under the leadership of Red Army instructor Xia Xue, the party's organization is restored, and revolutionary forces are regrouped. After the full outbreak of the anti-Japanese War, they promote resistance and organize public support for the front lines. Xia Xue, having learned the truth that Zhang Mingtang was not the informer, works to guide his ideological progress and injects the party's spirit into Peach Blossom Village, gradually transforming this spontaneous armed group into a progressive force. Zhang Mingtang falls in love with Peach Blossom during their mutual growth and they marry.
In his military career, Sun Rubai often faces exclusion as a secondary military force and struggles to achieve anything due to the collusion of local bandits and merchants. Huang Feier's active performance and courageous actions in the anti-Japanese War deeply move him, leading him to gradually realize that life should not be driven solely by personal grudges. When Huang Feier suffers at the hands of Japanese spies and the bandit Ma Sandao while organizing the transport of anti-war supplies, it awakens him. He fully eradicates the traitorous bandit Ma Sandao to ensure the safety of the transport routes for anti-Japanese supplies. With Xia Xue's help and persuasion in the face of national survival, Sun Rubai and Zhang Mingtang put aside their grievances and come together.
The critical battle to defend Southwest China—the Battle of Xuefeng Mountain—enters a crucial phase, and Zhang Mingtang and Sun Rubai join hands to lead their hometown fellows into battle, participating in the fight. They hold their positions amidst fierce combat and desperate struggles. Just as reinforcements arrive, they run out of ammunition and food, choosing to jump off a cliff together, sacrificing their lives for the victory of the Battle of Xuefeng Mountain, simultaneously singing the heroic song of youthful faith and selfless devotion to the country.
