Zhang Mingtang, a young officer of the Guizhou Qian Army, is the son of a wealthy businessman from Tongren. He is ordered to return home from the front lines of the anti-communist campaign to oversee the pursuit of the Red Army's Qian Dong Independent Division, which is breaking through. He begins to expand and reorganize the local garrison. Due to his sympathy for the Red Army's injured soldiers and the encouragement of his lover Huang Feier, he takes the risk of providing assistance for their evacuation. However, he is reported by Sun Rubai, the son of the rival Sun family, leading to the complete failure of the evacuation.
