In the early 7th century, during the reign of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, the 32nd Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo, completed the unification of various tribes and established the Tubo dynasty. He sent envoys to propose marriage to the Tang but did not receive consent. When Songtsen Gampo attempted to force the marriage again, he was once more rejected by Emperor Taizong, leading him to send his trusted Chancellor, Lu Dongzan, to Chang'an for an apology and to propose marriage again. Emperor Taizong was moved by Songtsen Gampo's sincerity but was troubled by the lack of a suitable daughter to marry. Li Xueyan, the daughter of Li Daozong, Minister of Rites of the Tang Dynasty and Prince of Jiangxia, was a clever, lively, and exceptionally intelligent lady from a noble family. During the selection of a princess, Emperor Taizong immediately set his eyes on Xueyan and conferred her as "Princess Wencheng" to marry the Tubo king. Princess Wencheng and her party faced numerous hardships on their journey to Tubo. Along the way, the Tubo deputy prime minister, Gongdun, plotted to harm Princess Wencheng. In the midst of their struggles, Lu Dongzan left Chang'an to catch up with the party and transformed the danger into safety. Songtsen Gampo personally went to the shores of Baihu to welcome Princess Wencheng, and they fell in love at first sight. Upon arriving at the Tubo capital, Lhasa, they were greeted by the local populace. During the grand wedding, the people cheered "Zaxi Dele," eagerly touched their foreheads to the princess's garments, and tore parts of her dress to keep as sacred objects for their blessings. The unique customs and ceremonies of the Tubo people deeply moved Wencheng. During the celebration, another plot by Gongdun and his group to harm Wencheng was thwarted. After accomplishing unification, Songtsen Gampo focused on economic development and established laws and regulations modeled after the Tang Dynasty, creating the "Six Departments of Law" for Tubo, and, based on Wencheng's suggestion, sent Tubo youth to learn in the Tang Dynasty. The Xiangxiong King, Li Mixia, plotted rebellion, prompting Songtsen Gampo to decide to pledge allegiance to Xiangxiong and send Lu Dongzan to stay in Lhasa to look after Wencheng. Gongdun seized this opportunity to spread rumors about an affair between Wencheng and Lu Dongzan, aiming to achieve two goals at once. Upon Songtsen Gampo's return from Xiangxiong, he was weighed down by the rumors and felt very depressed. Lu Dongzan bound himself to Songtsen Gampo's camp, requesting to clear the rumors and clear the princess's name. After a confrontation, the truth was revealed. As the "Six Departments of Law" were about to be finalized, Tubo faced a severe drought, leading many victims to flock to Lhasa seeking relief. Gongdun and the chief wizard took advantage of the situation to incite the starving populace to riot, attempting to mislead them into believing that they were following divine orders to drive out demons, falsely accusing Princess Wencheng of being a female demon. Songtsen Gampo saw through the conspiracy behind the exorcisms, and his formidable deterrent force forced the wizard to rename the alleged demon as the spirit attached to Wencheng's maid, Lamu, inciting the people to expel Lamu from Lhasa. Princess Wencheng felt guilty for not being able to protect the innocent Lamu and set out to search for her in the pastoral areas of Yalong. Before her departure, she asked Songtsen Gampo to open the granaries to aid the disaster victims. The "Six Departments of Law" were finally successfully promulgated, and Gongdun and the wizard's conspiracy to thwart the law's implementation collapsed completely. While searching for Lamu in the Yalong countryside, Wencheng also treated the sick among the people, gaining the title of "White Tara, Living Bodhisattva." The first palace, the Red Palace, in Lhasa was completed, and Songtsen Gampo welcomed Princess Wencheng back to Lhasa. After this ordeal, the bond between the two strengthened. Long years of war left Songtsen Gampo exhausted, and he fell ill on the way back to Lhasa after successfully defeating Gongdun, passing away at the young age of 34. Princess Wencheng lived with him for ten years without leaving any descendants. After Songtsen Gampo's death, he was buried in his hometown, Yalong, and Princess Wencheng continued to live there. Twenty years later, a Tang envoy, Shang Kai, once again entered Tubo at the order of Emperor Gaozong of Tang to invite Princess Wencheng back to Chang'an for her later years. Princess Wencheng realized that she had married into Tubo for the friendship between Tang and Tubo, and having embarked on this long path, there was no turning back. She bid farewell to her relatives heading east and remained on the plateau, becoming an eternal White Tara in the hearts of the Han and Tibetan people. Princess Wencheng and Songtsen Gampo hand in hand wrote an everlasting ode to the unity of the Han and Tibetan nations. *)&*&vod_class: Drama, Biography, History, Costume
