Hero of Loyalty and Righteousness - Wu Erlang Wu Song (played by Wang Wei) returns to his hometown Qinghe County after studying martial arts at Shaolin Temple for eight years. On his way home, he saves Xi Men Qing's sister from Yanggu County, Xi Men Ru Lan (played by Gao Haiyan), who falls in love with Wu Song at first sight. This leads to Wu Song making an enemy of the local tyrant Li Wu in Qinghe County. After reuniting with his brother, Wu Song goes to work as a guard at Zhang Yuanwai's house, where he encounters Pan Jinlian (played by Fu Yiwei), a beautiful maid. Zhang Yuanwai attempts to force himself on Pan Jinlian, and in defense, Wu Song knocks Zhang unconscious, thinking he has killed him, and leaves Qinghe County. In retaliation, Zhang Yuanwai marries Pan Jinlian off to Wu Dalang. Wu Dalang and Pan Jinlian cannot find their place in Qinghe County and are forced to move to the neighboring Yanggu County.
By chance, Wu Song learns that Zhang Yuanwai is not dead and eagerly returns home. On the way through Yanggu County at Jingyanggang, he kills a tiger that has harmed the people, earning the favor of the local magistrate, who appoints him as a captain. The brothers Wu Dalang and Wu Song reunite in Yanggu. When Pan Jinlian and Wu Song meet, she is left in tears.
Xi Men Ru Lan secretly falls in love with Wu Song and often seeks him out, provoking jealousy in Pan Jinlian. Unable to control herself, Pan Jinlian, disregarding her sister-in-law status, confesses her love to Wu Song, who rejects her, leaving Pan Jinlian humiliated.
Xi Men Qing (played by Zhang Zijian) resorts to underhanded tactics, harming merchant Qin and the maid Guihua due to a personal vendetta. Wu Song is determined to investigate this matter thoroughly. Fearing for his safety, Xi Men Qing plots against Wu Song. The magistrate of Yanggu sends Wu Song to escort silver back to his hometown, and Xi Men Ru Lan insistently accompanies him on the journey. Xi Men Qing sends someone to steal the silver, preventing Wu Song from returning to Yanggu.
In Yanggu, Pan Jinlian accidentally strikes Xi Men Qing, who becomes infatuated with her. Pan Jinlian falls into a trap set by Xi Men Qing and the matchmaker Wang Po, and engages in an affair with Xi Men Qing. Wu Dalang discovers this and tries to catch them in the act but is injured by Xi Men Qing. Persuaded by Xi Men Qing, Pan Jinlian poisons Wu Dalang.
Upon returning to Yanggu, Wu Song finds his brother has died under mysterious circumstances. After investigating, he discovers the true culprit is Xi Men Qing. Wu Song kills Pan Jinlian and goes to the Lion Tower to confront Xi Men Qing. After a fierce battle, Wu Song kills Xi Men Qing. Wu Song is sentenced to death, and Ru Lan, devastated by the loss of her brother, cannot bear to lose the one she loves. She causes a scene at the execution site, exposing her brother's crimes, which rescues Wu Song, who is instead sentenced to exile in Mengzhou for three years.
Ru Lan follows Wu Song to Mengzhou. Along the journey, the shadow of Xi Men Qing haunts Ru Lan, while the memory of Wu Dalang lingers in Wu Song's mind, creating a distance between the two lovers. Li Wu and his men hunt Wu Song relentlessly. At the Cross Slope Hotel, Wu Song meets Sun Erniang and Zhang Qing. To divert Li Wu, Ru Lan leaves Wu Song and encounters the flying centipede hired by Li Wu, forcing her to jump off a cliff.
Wu Song receives generous treatment from Shi En in Mengzhou, and helps to defeat Jiang Men Shen to reclaim Happy Forest. Jiang Men Shen seeks assistance from his backer, Zhang Dujun, who agrees to help him kill Wu Song. Zhang Dujun invites Wu Song to be the instructor at his residence, plotting to harm him secretly.
After jumping off the cliff, Ru Lan is rescued by Zhang Dujun's wife and taken in as a foster daughter. Wu Song and Ru Lan reunite after a life-and-death separation at Zhang Dujun's residence, filled with emotion. Zhang Dujun arranges a marriage between Wu Song and Ru Lan, causing Wu Song to let his guard down and fall into Zhang Dujun's trap, leading to his imprisonment. To save Wu Song, Ru Lan agrees to marry Zhang Dujun's nephew, Zhang Tuan Lian.
Wu Song's death sentence is commuted, but he is still exiled. Passing by Zhang Dujun's residence, he sees Ru Lan getting married and feels despondent. Zhang Dujun sends someone to kill Wu Song at Feiyun Pu. Wu Song kills the assassin and the culprit behind the attack upon returning to Zhang Dujun's residence, spilling blood on the Mandarin Duck Tower and killing Zhang Dujun and Jiang Men Shen.
Ru Lan is rescued by Sun Erniang and Zhang Qing, and they meet Wu Song again at Cross Slope. The two young lovers vow never to part again. To escape pursuit by the officials, Wu Song and his companions flee to Erlong Mountain, where they encounter the demon, the flying centipede. After a bloody battle, Wu Song finally defeats the flying centipede, but Ru Lan dies in his arms...
