In the early 20th century, a great flood swept through, separating Wen Alu from his mother, leaving only sorrow. Three years later, one night in Guangzhou, under a dark and windy sky, a gunfight broke out at the "Huaqing" bathhouse, resulting in the deaths of the leaders of the "Juyuan Society" and "Yishui Pavilion." The young tailor Wen Alu unintentionally witnesses this scene and unwittingly draws deadly trouble upon himself, being pursued by the Juyuan Society's third-in-command, Yu Yilong, who mistakenly believes he has killed the society leader during the rescue. Wen Alu panics and escapes in desperation. Fortunately, he is saved from danger by Song Fanghua, a student at the "Lingnan" Western-style school. Song Fanghua, having just performed "Hamlet" and still in costume, is mistaken for a handsome young man by Wen Alu. Upon returning to the tailor shop, Wen Alu shares his bizarre encounter with his master's daughter, Wan Xinlian, who has long harbored feelings for him and urges him to thank Song Fanghua for saving him. They remain unaware that Wen Alu has become the target of two factions of martial heroes pursuing revenge for their slain leader! The gunfight at the "Huaqing" bathhouse was actually orchestrated by Chen Yunsheng, the second-in-command of the Juyuan Society, who coveted the leader's position. His scheme involved eliminating the former leader and framing Yu Yilong as the murderer while disguising his true intentions as concern for talent, thus controlling Yu Yilong and removing the greatest obstacle to his own ascension. However, after learning about the night of the crime, Yu Yilong let the eyewitness go, prompting him to spread rumors and shift the blame onto an unknown witness. Believing Song Fanghua is a man, Wen Alu goes to express his gratitude at the school, but they miss each other. Wen Alu's unique personality and wolf-like cleverness spark great curiosity and interest in Song Fanghua, leading her to invite him to meet. Upon seeing Song Fanghua dressed as a woman, Wen Alu is taken aback but quickly admires her extraordinary grace and intelligence. Meanwhile, the persistent foreigner Matthew sees Wen Alu as a rival in love and cannot coexist peacefully. The impulsive and reckless only daughter of the former Juyuan Society leader, Zhao Cui'er, ventures alone to avenge her father at the Yishui Pavilion. Yu Yilong rushes to her aid, luring away her pursuers but is shot in the process. Fortunately, Wan Xinlian comes to save him, and from then on, Yu Yilong holds her dear, which plants the seed of Zhao Cui'er's jealousy. Chen Yunsheng, having achieved his desire to ascend to power, further consolidates his control over the Yishui Pavilion and fears that his plot to eliminate the former leader may be exposed. He issues a bounty on Wen Alu, intensifying the hunt for him. Full of ambition, Wen Alu vows to buy an expensive nanmu coffin for a grand burial of his parents. In Haikou, he talks big but soon realizes it is easier said than done. His refusal to back down drives him to seek money-making opportunities desperately. At this time, the family business of rich merchant Li Baoyin faces attacks from foreign goods, sparking resistance. The German firm Huaye, led by Hans, challenges Li Baoyin first with a boxing match. To his dismay, Hans has invited a US boxing champion, while Li Baoyin's hired contestants are unable to withstand the blows, resulting in a disastrous defeat. Enticed by the high bounty, Wen Alu, though ultimately defeated, holds his ground throughout the match, earning him respect and admiration from the audience. Among the crowd, Song Fanghua sheds tears for Wen Alu's resilience; if she was merely curious before, he has now captured her heart. Overnight, Wen Alu becomes a legendary young hero known throughout Yangcheng. With a boastful remark, Wen Alu indeed fulfills his vow and buries his parents in a nanmu coffin. Unexpectedly, this provides a clue for Chen Yunsheng, who is searching for a scapegoat. Wen Alu is captured and brought to the riverside for an extrajudicial execution. Fortunately, Yu Yilong arrives just in time and, recognizing Wan Xinlian's assistance, pleads for Wen Alu's life. Wen Alu, in turn, honorably refrains from revealing Yu Yilong's involvement in the murder. Zhao Cui'er, unable to contain herself, draws her knife against Wen Alu. Just then, Song Fanghua arrives with the police, causing Chen Yunsheng and others to flee, saving Wen Alu once more. After this ordeal, along with the inspiration from Song Fanghua, Wen Alu's intense desire to rise above mediocrity and confront his stagnation ignites. Hans also notices this indomitable Chinese youth in the boxing ring and tempts him to join the firm. Wen Alu is intrigued and determined to transform himself into a person of influence. Once in the firm, he falls into Matthew's hands and is assigned menial tasks. However, he seizes an opportunity, pretending to be Matthew, and successfully negotiates a substantial deal. Matthew, unwilling to let Wen Alu have his way, falsely accuses him of theft, leading to his punishment with a whipping. To destroy Wen Alu’s pride, Matthew threatens that if he confesses, he can avoid physical pain. Wan Xinlian urges Wen Alu to admit guilt, but Song Fanghua insists that honor is paramount. Wen Alu chooses to defend his honor, enduring the agonizing lashings that tear his flesh. From this point onward, he and Song Fanghua grow closer, while Wan Xinlian senses the shift in Wen Alu's feelings and is left heartbroken. Just as one wave recedes, another rises—Matthew, unwilling to lose, deliberately dresses Wen Alu as a clown and forces him onto the streets as a living advertisement…
