A family in New Delhi, India, is preparing for the wedding of their daughter Aditi (played by Vasundhara Das). Her father, Lalit (played by Naseeruddin Shah), has chosen a wealthy suitor, Hemant, who has returned from studying in the United States. However, Aditi is not happy because she has a secret lover, a married man who hosts a show on television. As she prepares for the wedding under her parents' pressure, she secretly meets her lover... The wedding also changes the fates of many others: wedding designer Dubey falls in love with maid Alice through a twist of fate; Aditi's cousin is having a passionate romance with an Australian exchange student; and Aditi's uncle Taiya offers to fund her cousin Leela's studies abroad. However, Leela is ungrateful and strongly opposes her daughter associating with Taiya, because she is hiding a painful past... The film won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 58th Venice Film Festival.
