Zhu De was born into a poor peasant family and participated in the Yunnan uprising led by Cai E, becoming a famous general of the Yunnan army. Later, due to internal strife within the Yunnan army, Zhu De went to Europe for further studies, met Zhou Enlai, and joined the Communist Party of China. After returning to the country, he took part in the August 1 Nanchang Uprising. When moving southward, Zhu De served as the commander of the advance troops, and after the main force's failure to attack Chaoshan, the troops led by Zhu De became a preserved revolutionary spark. After the meeting at Jinggang Mountain, Zhu and Mao’s Red Army gained fame and established the Central Revolutionary Base in Ruijin, successfully thwarting four attempts of encirclement and suppression by the Kuomintang. During the fifth attempt of encirclement and suppression, the Central Revolutionary Base was lost, and the Red Army had to embark on the Long March. During the Long March, Zhu De worked to win over the Fourth Front Army, crossing snow-capped mountains and grasslands three times, and eventually led the Second and Fourth Front Armies to reach Shaanxi. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance, Zhu De served as the commander-in-chief of the Eighth Route Army, leading famous battles such as the Battle of Pingxingguan and the Hundred Regiments Offensive. In the Liberation War, he, along with Mao Zedong, commanded the three major campaigns and the Crossing of the Yangtze River. After the founding of New China, Zhu De was diligent in governance, frugal, democratic in style, and practical in approach.
