During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the prestige of the Zhou emperor waned, and the feudal lords rose, each competing for dominance. The barbaric state of Chu, originally located beyond the Central Plains, gradually grew stronger over hundreds of years and finally became the most powerful state in the Yangtze River basin during the reign of King Wei of Chu.
