During the Cultural Revolution, a young intellectual named Lao Gan (played by Xie Yuan), who had spent seven years in a rural area, was assigned to a dilapidated primary school in the mountainous regions of Yunnan and Guizhou to teach. His fellow young intellectuals happily referred to him as the "King of Children." However, the school faced a severe shortage of teachers and materials, and he was surprisingly assigned to teach the third year of junior high school. Lao Gan was troubled by the overwhelming amount of political study materials and critical articles they were required to read, while the students couldn’t even recognize the new words in their primary school textbooks, which left him feeling despondent as he had to start teaching from the basics.
Months passed, and Lao Gan developed a good relationship with his students. One student, Wang Fu, who came from a poor background, was eager to have the dictionary that Lao Gan owned. During an essay assignment, he wagered the dictionary, believing he could write a narrative about the labor of the next day. Unfortunately, Wang Fu lost the bet and was unable to obtain the dictionary, so he resolved to copy it down entirely.
However, Lao Gan was eventually sent back to the team. Before he left, he gave his only dictionary to Wang Fu…
