During the Cultural Revolution, a young intellectual named Lao Gan (played by Xie Yuan), who had spent seven years in a rural area, was assigned to a dilapidated primary school in the mountainous regions of Yunnan and Guizhou to teach. His fellow young intellectuals happily referred to him as the "King of Children." However, the school faced a severe shortage of teachers and materials, and he was surprisingly assigned to teach the third year of junior high school.
